Swapping horses for ninja garlic: The Olympic sport undergoing massive change
By our Reporter

Several Olympic sports have evolved over the years, but few changes have been as drastic as the Modern Pentathlon. Ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, the ancient sport has modernized yet again, dropping horse riding and replacing it with obstacle racing, Ninja Warrior style.
UIPM President Rob Stull noted the sport's innovations make it more vibrant, accessible, and relevant for new generations. Obstacle racing will now accompany swimming and fencing, with the final discipline being a run-and-laser-shoot combo.
This major shift has attracted new athletes like brothers Kai and Luke Beckstrand, stars of American Ninja Warrior. They now represent the face of Modern Pentathlon's attempted glow-up, training up to six hours daily for obstacle efficiency.
While some pentathletes lament the loss of equestrian skills, organizers believe the changes are vital for Olympic status. The Beckstrands aim for obstacle racing to become its own discipline, bringing more eyes to the sport beyond its traditional audience. >>
